How Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy Can Reverse Hair Loss
Some men and women feel powerless, ashamed and even angry when they find their hair is falling out, but there are plenty of avenues to go down to reverse the hair loss process before you give up and shave it all off. Although a high percentage of the male population who will go fully or partially bald, you don’t yet have to accept your fate. For instance, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is showing great results as a treatment to reverse hair loss.
What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?
This treatment to reverse the hair loss process is carried out by using your own blood and centrifuging it so that the therapist can collect the plasma which is rich in platelets and other factors that help the follicles produce hair and reverse hair loss. PRP has been around for at least 50 years but used in regenerative medicine as PRP promotes healing and regeneration. In the more recent years, it has been applied to other areas of medicine and has been popularized by athletes who use PRP to help with rapid healing after injuries and/or surgeries. We now see PRP in the cosmetic medicine as it can stimulate the building of more collagen, help repair acne scars and soften wrinkles.
How is the PRP therapy done?
It’s simple. Using ultra-thin needles to reverse the hair thinning process, your therapist will inject your own platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which has been derived from your own blood, into your scalp. This can also be carried out after a treatment with a derma roller or stamp (where tiny needles are on a barrel or pad) to create micro-channels in the areas on your scalp affected by hair loss. PRP therapy is best completed in with at least 3 sessions, with treatments done once a month and followed up with a maintenance program every month, or 3-6 months depending on severity of hair loss.
Is PRP painful? Is it safe?
PRP therapy used to reverse hair loss is a safe procedure and has no known side effects. Only a slight pin prick sensation is felt when your blood is taken, usually from a vein in your arm, and the injections into your scalp can be a bit uncomfortable. But before you are given the injections in the scalp, a cream that numb the skin or an ice block can be applied to your head to reduce the chances of any pain.
Who are the best candidates for PRP treatment?
Anyone whose hair is thinning out and who want to reverse the cycle of hair loss can opt for PRP therapy. Also, anyone with male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), which is a genetic condition involving receding hairlines especially around the temples and hair loss on the top of the head, are also candidates. Women suffering from androgenetic alopecia related hair loss can also be helped with PRP. At Bioscor, we believe PRP works best with some form of hair-stimulating treatment such as Minoxidil, Propecia or Bioscor’s hair regrowth program products as they work together in a synergistic manner to rejuvenate hair follicles and stimulate hair regrowth.
How will I know if PRP therapy is going to reverse my hair loss?
After the fourth session, you will notice a fuzz of stronger hair since PRP not only enhances the production of new hair but strengthens the follicles. PRP treatments encourage new hair to grow, but the results will not show overnight and it will take time to see significant signs that your hair loss has been reversed. Visible results can be seen after the treatment cycle is finished, and after this time your new hair will keep on appearing. There is usually a lot of hair produced after six months and it will continue, however, you should consider repeat treatments to continue to reverse the hair loss process.
