What is natural killer (NK) cells?
The Role of Natural Killer (NK) Cells in Immune Defense and Cancer Prevention
Natural Killer (NK) cells are a type of lymphocyte, a subset of white blood cells, integral to the innate immune system. They are named for their ability to spontaneously kill tumour cells and infected cells without prior sensitization. Unlike other immune cells, NK cells do not require the presentation of antigens to recognize and destroy their targets.
How Does Our Immune System Work?
The immune system is the body’s defences mechanism against pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. It consists of two main components:
Innate Immune System: The first line of defense, providing immediate but non-specific protection against pathogens through physical barriers (skin and mucous membranes) and immune cells (including NK cells, macrophages, neutrophils, and dendritic cells).
Adaptive Immune System: This system provides a specific response to pathogens through the activation of lymphocytes (B cells and T cells). It has memory capabilities, allowing for a quicker and stronger response upon re-exposure to the same pathogen.
Role of NK Cells in the Body
NK cells play a crucial role in the innate immune response.
Their primary functions include:
Cytotoxic Production: NK cells produce cytokines, such as interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), which enhance the immune response by activating other immune cells like macrophages and dendritic cells.
Immune Regulation: NK cells help modulate the adaptive immune response by interacting with other immune cells, thus bridging the innate and adaptive immunity.
How NK Cells Therapy Helps?
The number of NK cells will gradually decline as we age. There are other factors that affect the NK Cells count such as an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, insufficient rest, smoking habit and regular alcohol consumption and etc. People who have deficient NK cells may be prone to virus infection and an increased risk of cancer.
