Vaccines help prevent pneumococcal disease, which is any type of illness caused by Streptococcus pneumonia bacteria. Pneumococcal infections can range from ear and sinus infections to pneumonia and bloodstream infections. Children under 2 years old and older adults above 65 are susceptible to the pneumococcal diseases. Those who have smoking habit and chronic lung illnesses are at risk for this diseases as well.
